Get ready for life beyond high school!

ACT

  • ACT is the American College Test.
  • All student take the ACT during their junior year.
  • If student would like to retake the ACT, they need to register online.
  • Mellen High School Code: 501265
  • Should you retake the optional writing test for ACT? Yes, if you are considering UW-Madison, Marquette University, University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, or other universities that require the writing test. If, at a later date, students find out the university they are planning to attend requires the ACT writing test, they must retake the entire ACT, not just the writing test.

ACT ASPIRE

  • The ACT Aspire is given to freshman and sophomore students.
  • All freshman an sophomore students take the Aspire in March
  • In late March, Sophomores may register for PLAN (Pre-ACT) in the Guidance Office.
  • The ACT Aspire is required in the state of Wisconsin so students do not have to pay to take the exams.
  • The test are delivered over a four day period.
  • Results are mailed to the school district in August.
  • The test predicts how students will do on the ACT.

SAT

  • SAT is the Scholastic Aptitude Test
  • Students should check with their College or University to determine whether ACT or SAT is the preferred test.
  • Students may register Online by clicking the above "SAT."

PSAT- Pre SAT

  • PSAT is the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test, and is normed for junior students.
  • In September, a letter will be mailed to all junior students, encouraging them to register for PSAT.
  • In September, Registration for PSAT will take place in the Guidance Office. Please make checks payable to Mellen High School.
  • In October, PSAT will be administered at Franklin High School.
  • In November, Counselors will return PSAT results to students.
  • Students that score in the top 1-% nationally, may go on to further competition in the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Competition.

Free Exam Preparation Websites

  • March2Success is a free tool brought to you by the United States Army.  March2Success helps students prepare for college entrance exams, state tests, financial aid, and understanding college admissions.  This tool is free to every students. 
  • Test Prep Wisconsin helps students improve their SAT, ACT, or GRE test scores with FREE tutorials, practice sessions, test-taking tips, and a vocabulary builder.
  • KnowHow2Go - A free graduation and test preparation resource.

Accuplacer

The purpose of ACCUPLACER test is to provide you with useful information about your academic skills in math, English, and reading. The results of the assessment, in conjunction with your academic background, goals, and interests, are used by academic advisors and counselors to determine your course selection.

Compass

COMPASS is an untimed, computerized test that helps colleges evaluate your skills. The results are used to determine program acceptance and placement into appropriate courses. You will receive your COMPASS® test results immediately upon completion of testing.?

College/University/Technical School

Selecting a college/university can seem overwhelming. There are so many schools to choose from as well as hundreds of areas of study. The links below are provided to help in narrowing the search.

Military

Students may consider enlisting in the armed forces. Whether it be the Navy, Air Force, Army, Marines, or Coast Guard, the opportunities and benefits vary from branch to branch. To compare branches, students should talk to the recruiters who visit the high school on a regular basis. Information is also available in the Career Center. Students are encouraged to explore their options on the military web sites.

Specialty Schools

There are post-secondary institutions that do not fit in the two- or four-year or technical college classifications. Yet, they offer formal training and education that lead to rewarding careers. Examples are cosmetology schools and over-the-road truck driving schools.

CLEP - College Level Examination Program

CLEP offers students the opportunity to gain college credit by taking an exam. Usually, a student takes the tests at the college where he or she is already enrolled. There are 2,900 colleges that grant credit and/or advanced standing for CLEP Examinations. Not all colleges offer credit based on CLEP tests, and different colleges offer different amounts of credit for the same test, so do your research before committing to an exam. Your best source of information is your college.
